Le 23 novembre 2010 au Studio SystemsTwo Brooklyn NJ avait lieu l'enregistrement du prochain album de David S Ware pour Aum Fidelity.
David, quoiqu'amaigri, dégageant une impression de fragilité, possède toujours cette même assurance de la direction à prendre, le même charisme. La sonorité n'a rien perdu de sa puissance, au contraire. La virtuosité défie les limites du possible en ce domaine... tout autant au ténor qu'au stritch, ou encore au sopranino, nouvellement adopté.
Si l'on y retrouvait William Parker comme à l'accoutumée, cette séance d'enregistrement réservait deux surprises :

La présence de Mohammed Ali, le batteur, bien vivant, offrant le plus de liberté et d'ouverture possible au jeu du saxophoniste, en phase parfaite avec lui

et, retrouvé en même temps que l'instrument indispensable au quartet, le compagnon des origines, heureux d'être à nouveau à sa place aux côtés de David , Cooper Moore', au piano.

One day we were playing a song. After two minutes, I could feel this overwhelming feeling of JOY . That this music and this being, David S.Ware, were special. It was an old feeling, like a church or many churches filled with light. Light cascading and swirling above the heads of the seers, who are closer to the sky. I was not afraid or involved with ego. It was the acknowledgement that the magic that processed Coltrane, Ayler and Pharoah Sanders had also manifested itself in the music of David S. Ware. Now, I didn't say their music was the same; I said the Magic and power of the cosmos was present in all these musics. When David blew into the horn, things began to happen and it was/is like nothing else beyond, below and on the surface.

Saxophonist David S. Ware’s comeback from serious health problems has been inspiring, and he continues an amazing run of music with this excellent trio album, designed to celebrate 50 years of playing the saxophone (he started at age 9!) Joined by bassist William Parker and drummer Warren Smith, Ware breaks out an arsenal of horns: tenor saxophone along with stritch and saxello. This gives him a range of sounds to call on during the course of this collectively improvised album. These men have been performing together in different context for several years and the experience that they have gained really comes through with an extraordinary album. All three musicians are deeply spiritual and the titles reflect that, and the music as well, coming from a post-Coltrane free jazz groove. Songs like “Astral Earth” develop slowly and patiently with Ware blowing long low tones over a rumbling foundation of bowed bass and percussion. The music develops more intensity as it heads for the cosmos, building to a majestic free jazz collective improvisation. They develop a torrid improvisational freedom on “Celestial” and “Desire Worlds” and Ware sounds like a man speaking authoritatively from great experience and humility as he weaves fast textures through the air. Parker and Smith are locked in with an ever shifting and evolving rhythm. The music is deeply woven and thoughtful and develops a completely unique sound that is amazing to hear. The have the tautness of the great Sonny Rollins trios of the 1950’s combined with the freedom and elasticity of the music as it has evolved since that time. This joyful album is the consummation of Ware’s art and is breathtaking to behold.

In December 2009 Ware returned to the studio, fulfilling the original idea of marking his 50th year of singular saxophone artistry with a special recording date. The session featured David on three different saxophones (saxello & stritch in addition to his customary tenor), along with William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums and tympani (the latter instrument as requested by David). The session was not preceded by group rehearsals (unlike most of his albums from the past 20 years) as the intent was to let the forms of this new music express themselves; trusting in the collective skill of the assembled musical masters to manifest the majesty. This session was of the godhead and is being released as Onecept on September 14, 2010. This trio made their live debut at Vision Festival XV, NYC on Sunday, June 27th. They will be performing live for the 2nd time, celebrating the release of Onecept, on October 4th at the Blue Note, NYC.

Precedent-setting solo saxophonists in jazz are certainly few and far between, but Roscoe Mitchell and Sonny Rollins have pulled it off. David S. Ware certainly has the tools to do it, while commanding attention with every phrase or phase he goes through. What sets him far apart from the others is that this live set features a different instrument on each of the three selections -- saxello, stritch, and his trusty tenor sax. This is titled as the first volume from a complete concert performance at the Abrons Art Center in N.Y.C., but is, in total, under 40 minutes long. There's plenty of meaty music to keep one's rapt attention, but the tracks are thankfully short enough not to drone into tedium. On the straight, rich saxello, Ware places value on various riffs and runs that are quite melodic, as "Methone" pushes the envelope of harmonic displacement in a common-sense free improv that carries the day and consistently lingers. Made famous by Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the rather tall and lengthy stritch in Ware's hands yields squawks and squeaks with pauses for concern, as "Pallene" expresses a gospel-sounding repast that recalls Kirk's famous "The Inflated Tear" from a pure sonic standpoint. "Anthe" ("Anthem" missing the m?) is a calmer and deeper spontaneous composition where Ware's tenor sax adopts a near serene and spiritual stance, with only occasional flourishes, honks, and screamed accents. There's no wasted motion or overt histrionics here, just the expertly devised and soulful playing of a masterful musician who can create his own rhythm internally. These three pieces flow beautifully, not in the strictest angelic, pretty, or peaceful fashion, but with the clear, assured dignity and confidence Ware has always displayed. It's not intended for garden-variety jazz listeners, but for fans and those aware of the gifts of this giant-stepping innovator in modern creative music.

AUM Fidelity is proud to announce the March 9th release of Saturnian (AUM060), the first in a planned series of limited edition solo recordings by eminent saxophonist/composer David S. Ware. Recorded live at New York’s Abrons Arts Center, this release documents Ware’s triumphant return to the stage in October following a successful kidney transplant. Each of the three extended pieces is performed on a different instrument: saxello, stritch, and tenor saxophone.

“To perform solo saxophone is who I have always been,” writes Ware in the liner notes. “This is the way I’ve practiced all of these years, as though I am performing a solo. It is just as satisfying as playing in any other context. The freedom allows you to witness and solidify what is passing through. There’s a voice inside each saxophone, expressing different orders of Being. When you listen, learn to open your third ear. Listen for the voice inside the music. It will expand who you think you are.”

As reported in such high profile outlets as the New York Times and NBC Nightly News, kidney donor Laura Mehr saved an ailing Ware’s life after a decade of chronic kidney disease, but 2009 was as much about musical renewal as personal adversity. His 50th year as a saxophonist began with the release of Shakti (AUM052), the recorded debut of his first working ensemble since his seminal quintet (1989-2007), and ended with his first-ever concert performances on stritch and saxello, Shakti on numerous best-of-the-year lists and preparations for two forthcoming 2010 releases.

Critics called Shakti “highly intriguing” (Jack Cooke, Jazz Journal), “towering and incandescent” (Andy Hamilton, The Wire), “a bold new statement from a true innovator” (Marc Medwin, Dusted) and “a mighty return for one of the greatest players alive today” (Chris Jones, BBC). PointofDeparture.org editor Bill Shoemaker adds, “There are plenty of saxophonists who have a commanding presence; few have as many ways of establishing it as Ware. Shakti is both a successful turning of the page for Ware, as well as a reminder of just how compelling a figure he remains.”

“In the course of a career that has involved considerable sacrifice and humility,” wrote Brian Morton in The Nation, “he has created a body of work that is—uniquely on the current scene—epic.” Active since the late 1960’s, Ware has performed and recorded with such notable figures as Ahmed Abdullah, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Marc Edwards, Beaver Harris, William Hooker, Cooper-Moore and Cecil Taylor, but he is best-known for his legacy as a leader, defined by his trademark sound, a devout spirituality and masterful interplay with his all-star ensembles. His discography features nearly 25 titles under his own name, including 17 at the helm of the David S. Ware Quartet, which helped redefine creative improvised music throughout the 1990’s and beyond. David has been recuperating from his kidney transplant of May 12 on schedule, the requisite regimen of anti-rejection drugs being met with the discipline of a mighty spirit accustomed to a discipline of such magnitude. He has been playing his tenor regularly at home, renewing himself further. Thank you truly once again to all who have sent their notes and donations of support. The Lithuanian (!) free jazz label NoBusiness has got off to such a great start, they’re already beginning to look like the heirs to the whole ESP Disk-Silkheart tradition of vital vinyl documents of contemporary fire music. And this has got to be their greatest move to date, a deluxe audiophile presentation of a concert by one of the all-time great free jazz quartets and heirs to the current previously channeled by the John Coltrane Quartet and the Frank Wright Quartet. This is the line-up featuring Ware, Parker and Shipp alongside drummer Guillermo E. Brown, recorded live in Lithuania in 2007. This set really has a ‘classic’ feel too it, opening up with a tempestuous Trane-heavy reading of Ware’s “Ganesh Sound”. Another highlight is the side-long plus take of Sun Ra’s “The Stargazers”, with Parker’s bass playing the perfect amalgam of pulse statement, tactile wood and wire feel and inspired tonal/melodic extrapolation. The closing version of “Surrendered” has all of the otherworldly emotional fanfare of Albert Ayler. The whole set is pressed across two slabs of vinyl that play at 45rpm to maximum sonic effect and it comes packaged in a full-colour gatefold sleeve. The David S. Ware Quartet are one of the great groups of my lifetime and this is a release to treasure. Edition of 1000 copies. Highly recommended.

David S. Ware’s Quartet with Matthew Shipp, William Parker and a succession of drummers concluding with Guillermo E. Brown was ecstatic jazz’s flagship, whose final 2006 Vision Festival concert had an end-of-an-era aura around it. However, the devotional impetus of the tenor saxophonist’s music precluded a long absence. Ware has returned leading an ensemble that places his fervor in a bracing new light. The obvious change is Joe Morris’ straight guitar sound, which is skeletal compared to Shipp’s colossal chords and clusters. Yet, instead of running head-on with Shipp’s counter, concussive force, Ware’s bellowed themes find a draft to ride in Morris’ linear approach, even at its most entwined and thorny. Morris also occasionally creates an earthy swing feel that securely connects Ware to jazz’s tenor tradition. Integral to this solder is the other significant personnel change in Ware’s line-up – Warren Smith. Ware’s had some excellent drummers; but they don’t come up to Smith’s level of mastery as a complete concert percussionist who, like Max Roach, approaches the traps as “multiple percussion.” Smith is constantly fleshing out the contours of a composition; a dicey proposition given that Ware’s writing often forgoes easy resolution. Smith’s deft dovetailing, which often entails a counterpoint between parts of his kit, helps keeps the music from muddying into an opaque mass. In this regard, the mesh of Smith’s approach with Parker’s patented mix of vertebrae-like motives, unadorned counter-melodies and arco textures is crucial. While Ware’s new palette on Shakti is the headline, it is his performances that comprise the body of the argument for the album. There are plenty of saxophonists who have a commanding presence; few have as many ways of establishing it as Ware. In his more tradition-evoking passages, his low and mid registers have brawn and soul that beg comparison with jazz’s most iconic boss sound practitioners. His altissimo sears like few others, past or present. But, Ware also does everything from delving into melodies that seem centuries older than jazz itself to creating out-of-nowhere whorls of sound. Shakti is both a successful turning of the page for Ware, as well as a reminder of just how compelling a figure he remains.

About David S. Ware and Friends

Saxophonist David S. Ware, whose free improvisations are based on profound musical knowledge, is the only true successor of John Coltrane. Ware's powerful tone and unbridled imagination make him a unique musician on the free jazz scene. At school, he first played alto and then baritone sax before discovering the instrument on which he would become famous: the tenor saxophone. As a teenager he was captivated by Sonny Rollins. In the seventies the two giants rehearsed ceaselessly in Rollins' apartment in Brooklyn. It was there that Rollins taught him the technique of circular breathing. In 2002 Ware thanked his old mentor with a new arrangement of Rollins' timeless composition The Freedom Suite. Ware's most recent album is entitled Renunciation and he will be performing at this year's festival as David S. Ware New Group. The quartet is made up of guitarist Joe Morris, bassist William Parker and drummer Nasheet Waits who will also be performing with his own band.

Avant-jazz titans the David S. Ware Quartet triumphantly disband—sort of

"I didn't disband the group," says saxophonist David S. Ware by phone from his home in Plainfield, N.J. "We came off tour in Europe two months ago." There's been some confusion of late, see, because a recent live album, Renunciation (AUM Fidelity), documents last year's final U.S. performance by the David S. Ware Quartet, one of the longest-running groups in New York free jazz. He says the group will reconvene for European festivals or one-offs if the money's right, but his bandmates seem comfortable with the idea of moving on to the next step in their individual musical journeys. And as far as American audiences are concerned, the David S. Ware Quartet is no more, period.Ware claims not to see what the big deal is. "We don't work in America anyway," he says. There hasn’t been an album with the finality of Renunciation since the Modern Jazz Quartet’s The Last Concert. Billed as their farewell US concert, the David S. Ware Quartet’s 2006 Vision Festival performance did not simply signal the end of an illustrious ensemble, but an episode, if not an era in jazz history. Despite being a label only a zealot could say out loud without wincing, one that widely missed the point of Ware’s music, “ecstatic jazz” is now embedded in the lexicon of the music at the Millennium, and the tenor saxophonist’s quartet with pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, and a series of drummers culminating with Guillermo E. Brown is perhaps forever tagged as its super group. Subsequently, the album’s title was suggestive enough for Ware’s gatefold notes to begin with the disclaimer that he was not in any way renouncing the Quartet’s music. The title merely references the three-part suite that is the centerpiece of the set, which itself stems from Ware’s personal consciousness-raising regime.
Undoubtedly, this explanation will only reinforce the ultimate vibe of the album for some listeners, as will the shape and tone of the concert. “Ganesh Sound” opens and closes the set, a magisterial motive that’s more sung than chanted, initially a glowing ember that ignites into wild, blessed fire. Comparisons to Sonny Rollins, from who Ware received early tutelage, go only so far in describing Ware’s playing. But, it goes some way to explain why Ware doesn’t develop such stately materials in a manner that more closely mirrors the open-valve Coltrane-Sanders trajectory. Sure, there are knotty lines, bellowing long tones and vocalizations that are quite far from the Rollins lexicon; the connection to Rollins is something akin to a stream of consciousness that is more associative than absolutist. Shipp’s fundamental comping, a dry jack-hammering of the harmonic contour without embellished torrents, intensifies the material without diffusing it in a blanketing, blinding heat. Parker provides dark subliminal rumbling and Brown thumps and highlights in equal measure. They place Ware’s tempestuousness in bold relief.
“Renunciation Suite” is structurally intriguing. The first part is largely antiphonal, with Ware’s intense solo volleys returned with equal force by the trio of Shipp, Parker and Brown. Ware, Parker and Brown merge for a short roaring exchange, then Ware and Brown go heads up before Ware gives Brown the stage for a lengthy solo that combined the raw “Air” attack of Denis Charles and a regard for space and a utilization of the entire kit that recalls Anthony Williams. The second part is a casebook example of the blunt force created by Ware’s caterwauling, Shipp’s pugilistic comping and Parker and Brown’s massed rhythms; perhaps this is the object of Ware’s renunciation, as the concluding movement is a relatively introspective duo between Parker and Shipp, a mingling of achingly fervent arco phrases and limpid arpeggios knotted tightly. It’s surprisingly that Ware left this culminating work teetering on a precipice. To bring the set full circle, he dips deep into the band’s book for “Mikuro’s Blues,” which is about as close to a mid-tempo Coltranish vamp as the quartet ever ventured, before reprising “Ganesh Sound.” A full three minutes of frenzied crowd reaction ensues before the quartet’s withering encore, “Saturnian,” makes it clear that it’s over.
They say when one door closes, another opens. If that’s the case with David S. Ware, get prepared for something mighty.

Et qu’est-ce, qu’une ballade ? Un ralentissement. Un ralentissement ? Non la lenteur, mais une moindre vitesse, une certaine quiétude, qui n’exclut pas que l’on s’emporte, que l’on soit emporté, sans urgence désormais. Tout freine, sauf soi. Le réel se rembobine. Ici, les musiciens ne semblent pas pressés d’arriver au but qu’ils se seraient fixés, puisqu’ils l’ont déjà atteint, ou évacué. Le problème ne se pose plus, il faut jouer, serait-ce dans l’œil du cyclone. Le DSWQ interprète donc ses ballades, celles qui ont marqué son histoire : Yesterdays, et Autumn Leaves, et Tenderly. Et celles composées par Ware en personne : Dao, et Godspelized, et Sentient Compassion, et Angel Eyes. Toutes frissonnantes, toutes divagantes, mais une divagation qui sait de quoi elle parle – qui sait de quoi il en retourne. On peut trouver révélateur que David S. Ware ait choisi de laisser filer Balladware sept ans plus tard (l’enregistrement remonte à 1999, alors que le saxophoniste était encore sous contrat avec Columbia : la major aurait-elle refusé de publier ces bandes ?), au moment où son quartette touche à sa fin, dit-on, la fin d’une aventure qui aura duré une quinzaine d’années et marqué ce qui pouvait l’être dans un " monde du jazz " aussi sensationnaliste, aussi indifférent (c’est la même chose). David S. Ware aura tout tenté avec son quartette et autour de lui : utiliser les ressources de son pianiste Matthew Shipp au synthétiseur, nouer les violons de Mat Maneri et de Daniel Bernard Roumain aux cordes profondes de la contrebasse de William Parker, sortir un triple disque live avec trois polyrythmiciens différents (Susie Ibarra, Guillermo E. Brown et Hamid Drake), reprendre la Freedom Suite du révéré Rollins, reprendre le répertoire de la formation mais en solo, laisser sa " section rythmique " reprendre le répertoire de la formation mais en trio… Et maintenant ces révélatrices ballades, jouées à satiété. David S. Ware joue toujours à satiété. Quand tout a ralenti, la sonorité hiératique du saxophoniste ténor se fait entendre, par combustion vive : sonorité qui claque au vent comme un long drap noir et or (de sable et de pourpre), qui se déplie, se déploie et se froisse, sonorité épaisse, rugueuse, fastueuse. Bloc d’air ou d’abîme. Une époque aussi raisonnable, aussi superficielle (c’est la même chose) ne saura que faire de la solennité assumée d’une telle musique. C’est égal. Nous sommes dans l’œil du cyclone.
